see more details arrived in September 1987. Honey bee samples were collected from 337 beekeepers' colonies across the state of Yucatan in February 1990. Morphometric classification showed that 16% of managed colonies had become Africanized within 2 1/2 years, probably as a result of the colonies' queens mating with drones from feral Africanized colonies. Unless protective equipment is available to local beekeepers, a dramatic decrease in beekeeping in the Yucatan Peninsula is predicted in the near future.< new para> ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:< new para> Samples of bees collected from 337 colonies owned by beekeepers in 15 localities (February, 1990) were classified by morphometric characters as European or Africanized, using the method of Daly and Balling (1978). Overall, 16% of samples were classified as Africanized; the percentage was higher in samples from northern Yucatan (> 20%) than in those from the south and west (< 10%). The process of Africanization is discussed.
