Descripción
This multi-modal study of US Navy Sea Air and Land (SEALs) commandos seeks to add to the research investigating mindfulness in High-Reliability Organizations (HROs). The study identifies two characteristics-comfort with uncertainty and a positive orientation towards failure-that allow SEALs to develop and sustain mindfulness over long periods despite the complexity of their missions, unpredictability of their operating environments, and inherent danger of their work. An analysis of ‘re-purposed’ online videos signals a link between repeated exposure to failure in training and a resultant increase in tolerance for uncertainty that enables HROs to operate in a near error-free manner, opening up new avenues of research for a wide range of reliability- seeking organizations.
