Traditional medicine is an important source of potentially useful new compounds for the development of chemotherapeutic agents. The first step towards this goal is the screening of plants used in popular medicine. Thus, antimicrobial research is geared toward the discovery and development of novel antibacterial and antifungal agents. As a result of a joint project on medicinal plants between the Departments of Botany, Pharmacognosy and Natural Products, and Microbiology of the Faculty of Chemistry, the phytochemical and biological activities of some plants have previously been reported (Dellacassa et al., 1989; Davyt et al., 1991; Gonz~ ilez et al., 1993). In the present paper, we continue our effort by screening for antimicrobial activity a number of plants used in popular medicine for the treatment of mucosal and skin infections, since these are the most evident infectious syndromes treated by folk medicine …
