Descripción
This is a revised edition of a book which was first published in 1977 [see PBA 48, 7199]. It contains extensively corrected calculations. Assuming that these are finally exact, it will be reassuring for the student to obtain the same numerical results as the authors when working through the copious examples. Typographically the book is still untidy and, although some errors have been eliminated, a number of mathematical symbols now appear upside down despite their more conventional presentation in the first edition. Similar carelessness extends to the bibliography, in which entries do not invariably appear in correct alphabetical sequence. Furthermore, the authors cite several important papers of which no trace can be found in the bibliography. The content of the text has been changed little and the challenging statement" both's' and'n'should be neither odd nor even" is retained. Short sections have been added on the joint scaling test and the triple test cross. A generalized method for estimating mean squares in line X tester analyses is included. Explanatory footnotes have been added in certain places, especially in the expanded section on the analysis of pooled data. In general, neither statistical rationale nor the assumptions inherent in different methods are discussed. It is conceivable that a student of this book might confidently undertake a path analysis, on the basis of the four-page oversimplified explanation, without any awareness of the work of Sewall Wright, whose name, though cursorily mentioned in the preface, is apparently nowhere to be found in either the text or bibliography. In providing such a superficial background, the book …
