The different studies that have explored the effects of family ownership and control on SME's efficiency have reached disparate, and even contradictory, findings. This paper discusses the limitations of these studies and, drawing on them, proposes a specific model based on three elements: 1. an ordinal categorical variable that allows us to measure three levels of "familiness", and 2. a multidimensional measure of efficiency based on the Data Envelopment Analisis (DEA) model.
