Handcuffed and boxed in by a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent on one side and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on the other, El Chapo’s extradition put a temporary end to the grand narratives created around the former head of the Sinaloa Cartel. El Chapo is now in solitary confinement. Like those extradited before him, he is likely to fade into obscurity as new mafia bosses are christened by prosecutors, police, and the news media. Some analysts consider the timing of his extradition to the United States a gift from the Mexican government to the incoming US administration: one day after El Chapo arrived in New York, Donald J. Trump, a man who used Mexico and Mexican people as a punching bag and a scapegoat for the problems of the US during his presidential campaign, was inaugurated President of the United States.
