Descripción
The Mexico project is located in Yaxcaba, Yucatan where maize, beans, squash and chili peppers are being studied. Cropping systems were investigated within an agroecological and socioeconomic framework. Landrace diversity was studied using ethnobotanical samples. Farmer perceptions of landraces were recorded and tested in agromorphological characterization plots. Also an isozymic characterization of these varieties was undertaken using isozymes pattern. Socioeconomic studies including gender, rural food processing, and crop culinary-gastronomic characteristics preferred by the wives of farmers were researched. Participatory plant breeding methods to reinforce in situ conservation have been implemented, including mass selection and a limited backcross breeding system for maize.
