This study covers the topic of the presence of Public Service Interpreting and Translation–PSIT–in Spanish media by studying this specialisation of Translation and Interpreting Studies in a small sample of online media. Likewise, it proposes a series of recommendations to improve this presence as well as sets forth the positive consequences that media could have on the current deregulated situation of PSIT in the country. Hence, the development and execution of the study are based on the following hypotheses: Firstly, the low presence of PSIT in online media in Spain is one of the elements indicating the status of PSIT in this country. Secondly, the increase of media presence on the Internet could positively influence the status of PSIT, and promote knowledge as well as acknowledgment of the former, and consequently, lead to professionalization. To verify these two hypotheses different theoretical aspects of PSIT, sociology of professions and media have been taken into account. These approaches have proven that PSIT has very little presence in Spanish society, a fact that is notoriously reflected in the lack of professional status this discipline has to date. Similarly, these approaches have revealed the power of the media in the dissemination of training and information as well as knowledge and acknowledgment of disciplines. Once all these issues were covered, the study proceeded empirically to extract all the discourses related to the PSIT from digital newspapers, blogs, Twitter and YouTube, using a proprietary search tool.
